Walk two blocks of North Cañon between Wilshire and Santa Monica on a Thursday evening in July, and the sidewalk tells you something the city map doesn't. There is a crowd on a bench at Beverly Cañon Gardens listening to a Latin band. A line curls out of a gelateria a few doors down. The former Palm space has a valet stand again. A rooftop at The Maybourne is loud enough to hear from the street. None of these things existed on this block, in this configuration, two summers ago.
The old Beverly Hills summer moved between Rodeo Drive shopping, the Polo Lounge, and whatever hotel had the newest pool cabana. That geography still works. It is not the geography of what actually changed this year. This summer, the center of gravity for a resident who wants to leave the house at 6 p.m. and be home by 10 is Cañon Drive, and the shift is dense enough to plan around.
The Thursday anchor nobody has to pay for
Concerts on Cañon is a weekly free series that runs every Thursday from June 4 through August 20, 6 to 8 p.m., at Beverly Cañon Gardens, 241 North Cañon Drive, right next to The Maybourne. The programming spans classic rock, jazz, Caribbean, Brazilian, and Persian music, which is a broader booking philosophy than the "cover band in a park" default most Westside cities settle for.
A few dates worth pinning to a calendar:
- July 9 — Susie Hansen Latin Band, salsa, cumbia, Latin and jazz
- July 30 — Woodie and the Longboards, a Beach Boys tribute with vintage surf hits
- The series runs weekly through August 20
Bring a blanket. The park is small enough that arriving fifteen minutes early is the difference between grass and gravel.
What actually opened around the corner
The reason Cañon has weight this year is that the restaurant openings clustered on and around it, not scattered across the Golden Triangle. If you drew a five-minute walking radius around the gardens, you would capture almost every marquee debut of the past twelve months.
The headliners:
Marea Beverly Hills. The first West Coast outpost of the acclaimed New York City restaurant. This is the one that changes what a serious weeknight seafood reservation looks like here.
Bad Roman. Took the former Palm space on Canon. A red sauce extravaganza from NYC, checkered print all over the dining room, wild boar statues with neon collars, negroni shots that slide across the bar on toy cars, flambéed lobsters with Calabrian chiles, eggplant parm fries, and crispy pepperoni cups with ranch dip. If Marea is the reservation you make three weeks out, Bad Roman is the one you walk to when a friend is in town and wants a show.
Azur. New to Canon Drive in 2026, channeling the French Riviera into a refined but relaxed room, French-Mediterranean menu leaning coastal and bright, trading stuffiness for warm late-night energy.
88 Club. The glamorous, supper-club-style project from Top Chef winner Mei Lin. A very different register from the Italian-heavy openings around it, which is part of why the block reads as a scene rather than a category.
Dante Beverly Hills. On the rooftop of The Maybourne, one building off the gardens. Brought by hospitality duo Linden Pride and Nathalie Hudson from the acclaimed New York aperitivo project, award-winning cocktails alongside an Italian- and Mediterranean-leaning menu made for leisurely poolside drinking.
Avra Beverly Hills. West Coast outpost of the New York Greek house, an 11,000-square-foot space designed like an open-air villa, drawing on whole fish flown in from around the world and grilled simply with lemon, herbs, and olive oil.
Read those together and a pattern emerges. Five of the six are East Coast operators picking Beverly Hills for their first West Coast footprint, and four of them chose the same two blocks. That is not a coincidence of leases. That is operators reading each other's location decisions and deciding proximity is worth more than differentiation.
The daytime layer changed too
Evening restaurants get the press. The layer that quietly shifts how a resident actually uses the block is the casual daytime arrivals, because those are the places you drop into three times a week without thinking.
Levain Bakery brought its six-ounce cookies. All'Antico Vinaio, the Florence-based sandwich shop, opened. Pura Vida picked Beverly Hills for its first West Coast location. Hi Bake opened its first U.S. store with French and Asian-inspired sweets. Bacio di Latte debuted its newest U.S. flagship gelateria.
Two of those five are first-in-the-country openings. One is first-on-the-coast. Beverly Hills used to be a place where casual food meant a hotel lobby cafe or a deli that had been there for forty years. That equation is changing in real time, and if you have been out of town for a season you will notice it on the sidewalk before you notice it on any list.
What still anchors the block
None of this pushed out the old guard, which matters. Spago is still Wolfgang Puck's flagship and one of the defining restaurants in Beverly Hills, with a seasonal California menu, deep wine list, dining room and courtyard among the most elegant in town, now serving dinner Tuesday through Sunday with both an à la carte menu and a multi-course California tasting menu. Wally's remains restaurant, wine bar, and gourmet retail under one roof, a Wine Spectator Grand Award room with more than 100 wines by the glass, turning out charcuterie, cheese flights, pizzas, and raw preparations built to pair. The relocation of the beloved deli Nate 'N Al's is still coming.
The story of the summer isn't the new arrivals replacing the old scene. It's that the two are now stacked into the same walkable strip.
Beyond Cañon: the park, the mansion, the festival
Two events off the Cañon corridor are worth knowing about.
Festival Beverly Hills happened at Beverly Gardens Park, 9439 Santa Monica Boulevard, on Sunday, July 12, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., a globally inspired arts and performance festival with music, dance, interactive workshops, and culinary programming. The 2026 lineup included Maruja Limon, Viver Brasil Dance Company, Shivam Arts Dance, Elida Almeida, Anibal Seminario, and Klezmer Juice, with partner programming from the Farhang Foundation, the Bulgarian and Chinese Consulates, Indonesian and Romanian showcases, and a stilt walker from the Trinidad and Tobago Consulate. If you missed it this year, the format is worth watching for 2027 because the booking is unusually specific for a public park event.
Greystone Mansion & Gardens at 905 Loma Vista Drive is running programming tied to the country's 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, alongside its ongoing mansion interior tours. Greystone is the counter-programming for anyone who wants a summer evening that isn't about a bar or a concert.
A Thursday plan that actually works
If you have not tried the new geometry of the block, here is a version that assumes you leave the house at 5:45.
- Park once, on Cañon or in the Maybourne structure, and don't move the car.
- Walk to Beverly Cañon Gardens by 6. Fifteen minutes of the concert.
- 6:45, drift to whatever you have a reservation for. Marea if you planned ahead. Bad Roman if you're in a mood. Azur if you want a room you haven't been in.
- After dinner, gelato at Bacio di Latte or a cookie from Levain, both within three minutes' walk.
- If you still have energy, Dante on the roof of The Maybourne stays loud late.
You can do the whole loop without pulling out a phone for directions, which is the entire point.
The read on all of this
Beverly Hills is a market where the interesting question is rarely whether something new arrived. Something new is always arriving. The interesting question is whether the new things are landing near each other, because that is what turns a strip of storefronts into a place people plan around. That is what happened on Cañon this year. If you already live within walking distance, your Thursday nights just got easier. If you live on the flats or in Trousdale and only come down for hotel reservations, you are quietly missing the block that residents are treating as the new default.
